A Winter Wildlife Adventure in the Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands in winter are nothing short of magical, and I recently had the privilege of experiencing this wilderness firsthand on a four-day wildlife photography expedition around Inverness with the exceptional Karen Miller, a renowned wildlife photographer whose expertise transformed what could have been a challenging trip into an unforgettable adventure.

The Mission

Our goal was ambitious: to find and photograph five iconic Highland species - Snow Buntings, Red Squirrels, Red Deer, Mountain Hares, and the notoriously elusive Crested Tit. Thanks to Karen's incredible knowledge of not just the animals themselves but also the landscape they inhabit, we succeeded in finding every single species on our list.

The Mountain Hare Quest

Throughout our days in the field, we encountered a wonderful variety of Highland wildlife. The Red Deer, majestic against the snowy woodland backdrop, the charming Red Squirrels with their distinctive ear tufts, and the delicate Snow Buntings were all incredible subjects.

We also spotted Blue Tits, Coal Tits, and Tree Creepers going about their winter business. And of course, the ever-present Robins - Britain's favourite bird - who seem to have a knack for stealing the show wherever they appear, their vibrant orange breasts providing a splash of warmth against the winter landscape.

The Red Squirrel Story

Among our Highland encounters, the Red Squirrels hold a particularly special place. These charismatic creatures, with their distinctive ear tufts and russet coats, are an iconic symbol of British woodland wildlife. However, their story is bittersweet. Once common throughout the UK, red squirrel populations have declined dramatically over the past century, largely due to competition from the introduced grey squirrel and the squirrelpox virus that greys carry but reds cannot survive.

Scotland now represents one of the red squirrel's most important strongholds in the UK. The Scottish Highlands, in particular, provide vital habitat where these native squirrels can still thrive. Watching them navigate the snowy branches with such agility and confidence was a poignant reminder of what we stand to lose if conservation efforts aren't maintained. Karen's knowledge of their behavior and feeding patterns allowed us to observe them at length, and capturing their personalities on camera was truly special.
