Not all fordite comes from car factories. This extraordinary pen is turned from Kenworth fordite — paint that built up over years on the production lines of one of America's most iconic heavy truck manufacturers, and it has a character all of its own.

Where Jeep fordite tends toward bold, graphic colour, this Kenworth piece is darker, moodier and altogether more complex. Deep black forms the backdrop, and rising through it are intricate, almost topographic swirls of burgundy, mauve, dusty rose and the occasional flash of teal — layer upon compressed layer that shifts and changes as the light catches it from different angles. It's genuinely mesmerising, like looking at a cross-section of something geological that took millennia to form rather than decades on a factory floor in the Pacific Northwest.
