Spalted tiger oak is a type of oak wood that features a distinctive "tiger" grain pattern caused by quarter-sawing, combined with spalting, which is the discolouration caused by fungi. The "tiger" stripes are a visual effect of the medullary rays, or growth rings, that are made prominent by the cutting method. Spalting is an aesthetic feature that adds black or dark brown "zone lines" and various brown or cream tones to the wood, creating exceptional figuring that makes each pen truly special.
