Storm Chasing Adventure

Posted on 4/6/26

Right, I’m sitting at Heathrow and the adventure is about to begin — this time it’s something very different to anything I’ve done before!

I’m heading to Denver, Colorado, for a week-long storm chasing photography tour across the Great Plains with Storm Chasing Photography Tours (https://www.stormchasingphotographytours.com).

This is prime season on the Plains — late spring is when the atmospheric conditions collide to produce some of the most jaw-dropping severe weather on the planet. We’re talking massive supercell thunderstorms with incredible sculptural structure, vast skies boiling with bubble-like mammatus clouds, enormous lightning strikes, and — if we’re really lucky — tornadoes. The kind of skies that make you feel very small indeed.

The tour covers a huge swathe of the northern, central and southern Plains, chasing whatever the weather throws at us, following storm systems on radar and learning to read the structure of these incredible atmospheric events to create the most compelling images possible. Long days, long drives, lots of fast food — and I absolutely cannot wait! 😄

One thing I’m particularly excited about is having a proper go at timelapse for the first time. Watching a supercell build and rotate over the Plains in real time is one thing — capturing that whole dynamic drama compressed into a few seconds of footage is something else entirely. Fingers crossed the Hasselblad and I can pull it off!

Watch this space — it’s going to be a wild week!
